Peering into the self-assembly of surfactant templated thin-film silica mesophases.

It is now recognized that self-assembly is a powerful synthetic approach to the fabrication of nanostructures with feature sizes smaller than achievable with state of the art lithography and with a complexity approaching that of biological systems. For example, recent research has shown that silica/surfactant self-assembly combined with evaporation (so-called evaporation induced self-assembly E...

Convective self-assembly to deposit supported ultra-thin mesoporous silica films

For practical consideration in applying mesoporous films for sensors, it is ideal to fabricate thinner films to achieve fast transport and therefore rapid response. Here we report a new, facile method to deposit mesoporous silica films with thickness less than 100 nm through combining convective self-assembly and surfactant/silica self-assembly. Through an interfacial capillarity defined in the...

Mechanisms of kinetic stabilization by the drugs paclitaxel and vinblastine

Microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs), widely used as biological probes and chemotherapeutic drugs, bind directly to tubulin subunits and "kinetically stabilize" microtubules, suppressing the characteristic self-assembly process of dynamic instability. However, the molecular-level mechanisms of kinetic stabilization are unclear, and the fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic requirements for dynam...

Molecular dynamics simulation of self-assembly of n-decyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles.

In this paper, a molecular dynamics simulation of surfactant self-assembly using realistic atomistic models is presented. The simulations are long enough to enable the observation of several processes leading to equilibrium, such as monomer addition and detachment, micelle dissolution, and micelle fusion. The self-assembly of DeTAB surfactants takes place in three stages: fast aggregation of mo...
